Well, apparently I missed 2014 altogether. Photos from last years morel harvest have been added to the site. It was a short season but the mushrooms were extremely prolific. Well, another morel season has come to a close. It was an adventurous season, covering the Northwest Territories from Kakisa to Edzo to Fort Smith in search of the motherlode. We drove through snow at the 60th parallel, chased bears up trees, were driven out of the campsite by another forest fire and ravaged by relentless, insatiable mosquitos. The journey has begun for another morel season. As per usual I can’t discuss the specifics of my location at this point but I’ll be somewhere in the boreal forest at least. Due to the distance from markets, fresh product will not be available this year. Everything will be dehydrated on the spot and preserved for year-round enjoyment. Currently, I am enjoying some down time with family and friends in Ontario, doing the Christmas thing and exploring the possibility of bringing more business to this part of the country. After a not so successful morel harvest, I am taking some down time to focus on the business end of things. Harvesting will resume in the fall with a variety of forest mushrooms as well as some rosehips and various tea substitutes. In other news, our dried mushrooms are now available at The Bench Artisan Market in Penticton as well as Picone’s Fine Foods in my hometown of Dundas Ontario.
The most wonderful time of the year! My journey begins today as I head out in search of the great morel. For security reasons, I can’t divulge the exact location but I can ensure a crazy adventure and bountiful harvest. Stay tuned for updates and photos from the patch.
